Chair leg painted and distressed in the shabby chic style
If you’re looking for distressed furniture for your home, visit Your Wonder Emporium’s collection. From her Portsmouth-based workshop, Georgina hand-paints and distresses a range of furniture.
What is Distressed Furniture?
Distressing is a way of finishing a piece of furniture or other decorative item to give it an old, weathered look. Over time and with years of service, furniture becomes scratched and knocked and naturally ‘distressed’. The layers of varnish, polish or paint wear off giving it character and much appeal.
However, newer furniture can be treated to add character and the appearance of being older than it is. There are different techniques used to distress furniture. One of the most popular methods used today is to shabby chic the items. Other distressing techniques use crackle varnishes and glazes to achieve a weathered, antique look.
Furniture of all ages can be distressed, as can metals, plaster work and other materials. Knobs and handles can be treated in the same way to match the look of the piece.
The Emporium’s range of distressed furniture is in the shabby chic style. It is hand-painted in coats of Annie Sloan chalk paint and a wax finish applied. Areas of the paintwork are then gently rubbed back to allow the original colour or finish of the wood to shine through.
